The people of Letterkenny would normally refer to Scoil Cholmcille as the ‘Boys School’, but today marks a brand new era for the local primary school.
Girls have taken their seats in the Junior Infants classes today as the school formally became a mixed co-educational school.
Scoil Cholmcille has been synonymous with the education of the local Letterkenny school boys for the past 122 years. The doors were opened to girls of the town today in a historic move which reflects a changed society in modern Ireland.
Just up the road, the community of Scoil Mhuire gan Smál also welcomed its first boys to their Junior Infants classes today. This is the first time that the former all-girls school has had male pupils since 1975/76.
