A Killygordon man and former Republic of Ireland underage goalkeeper is making big waves as a coach in America.
Gavin Carlin signed a professional contract at West Bromwich Albion in 2007.
After being released by West Bromwich, he spent a season at Forest Green Rovers, before moving to America.
Carlin’s own career had been blighted by injury trouble and he studied sociology at Jacksonville University in Florida. He now runs ‘Good Lad Soccer’.
“I knew I had so much knowledge from my playing days that I could pass on,” he told Steve Strum of Buzz TV.
“I was very lucky. At 16 I joined West Bromwich Albion. I got some very good coaching from Dan Ashworth (now the FA’s technical director) there. I developed a love of coaching and teaching. I came to Jacksonville University and was coaching on the side.
Carlin is the son of former Irish decathlon champion Seán Carlin.
