A piece of history has been unveiled at Letterkenny bus station.
Letterkenny Community Heritage Group in conjunction with Bus Eireann has unveiled a picture wall plate of the town’s past railway heritage.
The plate displays old images of both the CDR and Lough Swilly trains that ran to and from the town.
The images include the Owencarrow disaster which happened in 1925 near Cresslough while another photo shows the transition from rail travel to bus.
In attendance at the unveiling were members of L.C.H.G. Johnny McCollum and Gabriel Flood, Bus Eireann management and staff members Bernard Griffin, Kevin O’Donnell and Martina Magee along with Pauric Gallen.
Padraig’s father Micheal drove the last train from Strabane to Letterkenny and Neil Gallagher whose late father Donal was also present on the footplate on that final journey which marked the end of an era for local rail transport.
The wall plate can be viewed inside the ticket office area at the Bus Station in Letterkenny.
