Investigations are continuing into an incident in which an unmarked garda car was repeatedly rammed in Carrigart.
Two gardaí sustained minor injuries when their patrol car was hit on Tuesday morning. However, this incident could have been much more tragic, says Chairperson of the Donegal Joint Policing Committee Cllr Gerry Mc Monagle, who is calling for more Garda resources for the county.
Cllr McMonagle plans to write once again to the Garda Commissioner to request a meeting with a delegation from Donegal Joint Policing Committee to discuss the lack of resources and personnel that local Gardai are having to work with in the county.
Cllr McMonagle said: “Monday’s early morning ramming incident where two Gardai were injured is proof if any more is needed that Gardai in Donegal are seriously under-resourced. They are unimaginably overstretched with cuts to Garda numbers, vehicles and overtime. Stations have been closed down right across the county putting Gardai in further jeopardy and lessening the service that gardai can provide for our local communities.”
He added: “This latest ramming incident could have been more tragic for those involved. We have in recent years lost two gardai to this type of behaviour, Garda Gary Mc Loughlin who was tragically killed at Burt and Garda Robbie McCallion also knocked down and killed whilst executing his duties in Letterkenny.
Cllr McMonagle has appealed to anyone with information that would identify the criminals involved in the Carrigart incident to pass the information on to the Gardai.
“We must catch those responsible and bring them before the courts before there are more tragic incidents like the ones that led to the deaths of Garda McLoughlin and Garda McCallion,” he added.
Gardaí in Milford are seeking information on a Volkswagen Passat bearing partial registration number 02-MH which was involved in the ramming.
Anyone who has any information is asked to contact Milford Garda Station on 074 9153060
