Ballybofey and Stranorlar Golf Club have been crowned Ulster Champions in the All-Ireland Mixed Foursomes.
It’s been 24 years since the Ballybofey and Stranorlar Mixed Foursomes Team won an Ulster Title and indeed went on to win the All Ireland that same year.
The Ulster Title was also picked up in 1993 and were Ulster Finalists on four further occasions – including 2011 where City of Derry GC beat Tony O’Meara’s team in Letterkenny GC on their way to all Ireland success.
There was great jubilation after when the Ulster Pennant was presented to captains Terry Farrell and Margaret Hynes from representation of the Ulster Branch of the GUI.
Margaret and Terry both put a lot of meticulous thought into the pairing of this team.
They both knew how proud the Club would be if they could pull this off.
Ballybofey and Stranorlar were complete outsiders in this Donegal battle to be the best in Ulster, whereas Rosapenna had a lot of information about the East Donegal side as a number of their players had been former members of the B&S Club.
On paper, Rosapenna looked very good. None the less, paper when wet, can be easily torn.
B&S battled hard and asked questions of Rosapenna who answered quite well but in the end, the the spirit that was shown from these five B&S pairings was commendable to say the least and went on to win 4 matches to 1.
A place now awaits the Finn Valley club in the All Ireland Semi Finals against Leinster Champions Craddockstown Golf Cub and will be held in Milltown Golf Club, Co Dublin. All support from Ulster will be much appreciated so keep the 2nd and 3rd of October free in your diaries.
JB CARR
The Ballybofey and Stranorlar JB Carr Team organised by the very astute Ivan Stewart are already in an All Ireland final this weekend.
The JB Carr Diamond Trophy hosted annually by Woodenbridge Golf Club in the small town of Avoca, Arklow in Co Wicklow, draws quite a stiff competition from all over Ireland. Our B&S Lads had a lot of thought matches en route to the finals.
The draw will be made on Friday night at the Gala Dinner for the semi final pairing and representing Ulster will be ourselves B&S, from Lenister will be the Co Kildare side, the K Club, From Munster we have the Co Tipperary side Tullamore and from Connaght we have Co Galway side Portumna.
Semi finals will be held on Saturday 1st September and Finals on Sunday 2nd September. Once again all support is very much welcomed for these men.
Donegal Junior Scratch Matchplay Team
Although absent through other club duties, Freddie Wilson sent his team to Murvagh to compete against Strabane GC in this very competitive competition.
A few new faces were pulled into the team for this semi final and came back with a brilliant victory. Home club Murvagh played in the other semi final against Rosapenna can came out on top so now have a massive home advantage against ourselves in the final on 16th September so anyone free on that particular day, get yourselves over to Murvagh and lend your support.
