Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Brexit Lisa Chambers has welcomed the UK’s Brexit Secretary’s assertion that a good deal with the EU is within sight.
Dominic Raab made the comments ahead of the publication of a number of technical papers on the British government’s preparations for a no-deal Brexit.
Raab said that Britain would not risk triggering a trade-off battle with Brussels by imposing new border checks or travel restrictions.
Deputy Chambers said: “While I welcome Dominic Raab’s statement that the UK has secured agreement on about 80% of the issues and that a “good deal” is within sight, the publication of these documents is a signal that a no-deal Brexit could still be a possibility.
“This is not in the best interests of Ireland and the government now needs to step up efforts to ensure that a deal can be reached between the UK and the EU.
“Despite the overriding theme of the speech being positive, I was concerned by some of the language used by Mr. Raab, particularly relating to the EU’s engagement in the negotiating process, which I believe has always been constructive and practical.
“What we need now is a period of concentrated engagement between the UK and the EU to secure a deal, which will serve the needs and interests of both sides so that a successful conclusion can be reached.
“Our government needs to assess the technical notes released today and examine their implications on Ireland. There are still a number of outstanding issues, particularly in relation to the border, that must be clarified. The Brexit deadline is now fast approaching and real effort is needed to ensure that a deal is reached and Ireland’s interests are protected”.
