Students who did not secure a pass in Leaving Cert ordinary level maths today are being assured not to panic as local options are available.
Letterkenny Institute of Technology and Donegal Education and Training Board launched the innovative “Enabling Maths” course in 2016 for students who lack a pass in ordinary level Maths.
This year more than 3,700 students have failed their Leaving Certificate maths exams, effectively locking them out of many third-level courses which require a pass as a basic entry requirement.
The “Enabling Maths” initiative is designed to give young people a second chance to succeed in Mathematics and thus, overcome the entry requirements to enter a wide range of courses at LYIT, for the coming academic year 2018/2019.
The course will run for two weeks in early September (commencing Thursday 23rd August – Wednesday 5th September 2018). Visit lyit.ie for more details.
A hotline has been opened at LYIT today to offer support to students who need any advice or support about what the next stages are in the CAO process.
A spokesperson for the LYIT said no question is too small: “In addition, if you have failed Ordinary Level Maths, do not panic, we also can discuss the Enabling Maths Initiative which is available at LYIT.
“Please don’t hesitate to contact our Schools Engagement Officer, Fiona Kelly or Tracey Sheridan, LYIT Admissions Office on (074) 9186105 or (074) 9186126. Tracey and Fiona will be available from 9am to 5pm today (15th August) to answer your queries and calls.”
