The residents of a Carndonagh housing estate are calling for the urgent repair of a footbridge that has been left in a dangerous state since the floods of August 2017.
The bridge behind Donagh Park was once used as a shortcut to Carndonagh Community Hospital and local primary schools. However, for the past year has remained damaged from the flooding, with a safety barrier toppled and rocks scattered across one side.
“Donagh park has 45 houses and 30 children under the age of 12. There is nothing in place to keep kids safe from falling into the river,” said one concerned resident.
A local petition is doing the rounds as residents call on Donegal County Council to repair the bridge and restore a safe crossing to Carndonagh’s amenities.
Cllr Albert Doherty and local organisers Adam Hawes and Marty Brides are leading the petition with the hope that the area can be reopened as the new school year begins.
