The Road Safety Authority has confirmed they have commenced the recruitment of new driving testers in Co. Donegal.
At least one believed to be based in Letterkenny.
The announcement was made by the RSA in response to a motion moved by Cllr Adrian Glackin in Letterkenny Municipal District.
Speaking after receiving the correspondence, Cllr Glackin said he was delighted by the move.
“This is very welcome news, particularly for the Letterkenny area where I have been contacted regularly by people who are frustrated with excessive delays in sitting their driving test.
“These delays have been adversely impacting people’s ability to gain employment and go to college, not to mention the costs associated with additional lessons.
“In a vast county like Donegal, with limited public transport, access to a car is not a luxury but an essential part of life.
“I have been working on this issue for quite some time and I moved a motion to this effect at the Letterkenny Municipal District Committee to gain support for this demand.
“I am happy that the RSA have recognised the importance of these concerns and have moved to recruit more testers. I am also hopeful that they will be based in Letterkenny where current waiting lists are far, far too long.
Cllr Glackin concluded by stating that he understood the new staff would be in place by autumn.
