Promising steps are being made in the process of establishing repair works for MICA-defective homes in Donegal, according to Donegal County Council.
A draft protocol to inform the course of action for remedial works was created by an expert panel and put through public consultation in recent weeks.
The next step is for the protocol to be finalised, which Donegal County Council Director of Service Joe Peoples said is a significant development.
Inishowen Cllr Albert Doherty has said that the council must be seen to be pressing for answers for Donegal homeowners.
Cllr Doherty said: “I want the council to highlight there is a need for an early and urgent response.
“I don’t want a long period of analysis, I believe the Department of Housing has experience with Pyrite and it should not take a length of time. We want a full commitment to a redress scheme for MICA-affected homeowners.”
Cllr Doherty asked that his motion raised at July’s County Council meeting be sent to the Government, Minister for Housing Eoghan Murphy and the Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe.
The motion seeks an early and urgent response and outcome from the expert panel’s review, Government support for council tenants and private MICA-affected homeowners, urgent remediation commencement works in 2018, financial assistance and reimbursement for families who have had to leave their homes for health and safety reasons, and commitment to a full redress scheme for householders.
