On an evening when Michael Murphy posted nine points, Donegal overcame Roscommon 0-20 to 0-13.
There was en edge to the air when Ciarán Brannagan, the referee, hoisted the O’Neills into the air at the beginning, but Donegal managed to avoid a slip despite some early pressure. Seven points in a row from Donegal turned the pendulum and they didn’t look back.
“We knew there’d be a sting from Roscommon,” Bonner said.
“We matched them early and kicked seven scores. We didn’t kick on after that, but it was a comfortable victory and the lads saw it out well.
“There’s a lot of good footballers there and it’s about getting that balance right. There’s a really good squad and they’re all really pushing it.
“We had some brilliant scores and defensively we were very solid. Maybe in the final third, we could have had more composure.”
