Donegal mountaineer Jason Black is on the verge of conquering the mountain which has evaded him all his career.
The Letterkenny man has now reached a staggering 25,600ft and has reached camp 4 on the climb only ever completed 320 times in history.
Black will become only the second Irish person to summit the mountain after Limerick man Ger McDonnell.
McDonnell was unfortunately killed along with ten other climbers as he descended the mountain in August 2008 following an avalanche so Black knows his climb is far from over.
Jason hopes to be able to summit the 28,251 ft mountain on the China–Pakistan border with a final push tomorrow, Sunday.
Despite the huge task ahead of him, Black said he had the McDonnell family in his thoughts and prayers and was doing the climb in honour of Ger.
In a message to family and friends he said he feels “super strong and excited” as he reaches the final stages of his journey.
He has been in satellite phone contact with wife Sharon and family back in Letterkenny to let them know of his progress.
Jason said “I feel strong and in control. The summit is just a day ahead of us. We are on the eve of our push and I am extremely humbled to be sitting here. K2 hasn’t been kind to us before.
“Thank you for all the well wishes back at home and hopefully by tomorrow we get that photograph when he reach the summit.”
