Five hotspots to visit on a sunny day in Donegal

The sun is shining gloriously on Donegal this week and it’s the perfect time to get out and about and enjoy the county.

If you are looking for somewhere scenic to take the family or escape from the office, we have a list of great spots to visit.

There are so many options for a sunny day out in Donegal, but a beach trip is a must. So, we’ve included a nearby beach to visit at each of these beauty spots.

1. Horn Head

A scenic drive from Dunfanaghy leads to a breathtaking beauty spot on the dramatic Horn Head peninsula. Admire the sharp cliffs, crystal clear sea and look out on the horizon as far as the eye.

Horn Head is a prime sunset location too if you time your journey right.

Nearby beach: Tramore

2. St John’s Point

One of the Great Lighthouses of Ireland,  St John’s Point is a real escape to the Wild Atlantic Way. A narrow drive down the 11km peninsula past Castle Murray will bring you to the landmark that is surrounded by invigorating seas and fantastic views. Spot the EIRE sign for a great photo opportunity.

3. Grianan Aileach

The ringfort overlooking Inishowen offers amazing views in the sunshine. Discover the story of Aileach and the Tuatha de Danann for a slice of Donegal’s ancient past.

Next stop: Lisfannon Beach in Buncrana

4. Surf’s Up in Bundoran

What better time to enjoy the not-so-freezing sea than during a heatwave. If you’ve never surfed before, then head to Ireland’s surf capital in Bundoran for lessons at one of the many surf schools. The seaside town is a great place to explore and enjoy an ice cream under the sun.

Next stop: Rossnowlagh beach is perfect for beginner and intermediate surfers.

5. Oakfield Park, Raphoe

This attraction thrives at summertime. The kids will love the train and running around the colourful gardens. You can spend a day in Oakfield Park wandering around the beautifully landscaped parklands, the natural woods and picture perfect gardens. Take a rest stop outdoors at the ‘Oakfield Perk’ coffee van, or dine in Buffers restaurant with open views of your surroundings.

Next stop: East Donegal may not have beaches, but some sunbathing by the lake at Oakfield Park is just as relaxing. Afterwards, a sunset visit to Beltany Stone Circle will never fail to mesmerise visitors.
