Gardai in Donegal made a total of 82 arrests in three days over the rally weekend, but genuine fans of the Donegal International Rally were not involved in any incidents.
Fourteen arrests were made on Sunday night, adding to the 66 total from Friday and Saturday.
Forty-six of the 82 arrests were public order offences, with the majority occurring near Letterkenny, far from the rally stages and at nighttime.
Eighteen people were arrested for dangerous driving and 10 for drink driving offences between Friday and Sunday. There were five arrests for drug-related offences.
Inspector Goretti Sheridan said that many of the public order offences resulted from people acting under the influence of alcohol at night. The majority were dealt with by way of Adult Caution.
Inspector Sheridan added that true rally fans who attended the stages were cooperative and respectful and not involved in the incidents.
Up to 60,000 people travelled into the county for this year’s 46th Donegal International Rally. Heavy traffic brought Letterkenny’s main routes to a standstill at various times. A large Garda presence was drafted in and the Garda Helicopter was in operation to monitor the crowds.
A special sitting of Letterkenny District Court was held on Saturday night to hear six cases. Other road traffic matters will be brought before the July 2nd sitting.
In 2017, a total of 90 people were arrested for a range of offences during Rally Weekend including 42 for public order, 17 for dangerous driving, 25 for drink-driving and 6 for drugs offences.
The arrest rate in 2016 was 56, which was double the number of arrests compared to 2015.
