Making Tracks Day Out in Donegal, May 2018
The success of the first ‘Making Tracks Day Out’ in Donegal was off the rails! On the 30th May a group of 28 got together at the Old Station House Donegal Town, previously knows as Donegal Town Railway Station, to enjoy the much-anticipated excursion.
The idea for the excursion developed when the new manager for County Donegal Railway Restoration (CDRR) CLG, Donna Maskery visited local service providers and realised the potential for excursions that linked and promoted local places of interest in rural towns and village locations.
The excursion started at the Railway Heritage Centre housed in the Old Station House, Donegal Town and visited St Connells Museum Glenties and the Isaac Butt Heritage Centre before enjoying refreshments and music at McKelveys pub in Ballybofey and returning to Donegal Town through Barnes Gap.

The sun was shining and the temperature was 24 degrees when a full bus left the railway Heritage centre in Donegal Town with two local tour guides in full period costume. The two guides Niamh and Cathal, volunteered their time on the day as well as the weeks before the trip researching information and gathering local stories to inform, engage and entertain en-route.

Making Tracks Day Out was a team effort with CDRR spearheading the project but was only made possible with everyone working closely together. The day was a great success and work is now underway to scope out the next excursion.
