A high voter turn-out is expected across Donegal today as the electorate go to the polls to decide whether or not to retain the Eighth Amendment.
Many polling stations opened since 7am and will remain open until 10pm tonight.
The vote will end many months of fierce campaigns from both the yes and no sides in the campaign on the future of abortion in Ireland.
Both the yes and no camps in Donegal say they are confident of victory in the referendum.
Both camps have said they will have tally people at polling stations across Donegal in a bid to get a feel for what way the voting is going.
The official counting of votes in Donegal will take place at the Aura Leisure Centre in Letterkenny from 9am tomorrow.
Although it could be a number of hours before an official result is known from Donegal and the rest of the country, there will be early indicators as to how voting trends are going.
Experts say however, that this could be one of the tightest referenda to call in the history of the State.
