A community consultation event is being held in the Courthouse in Lifford this evening (23 May 2018) at 6.45pm on proposals for the new Riverine Community Park.
This event is being hosted by Donegal County Council, as Lead Partner, as part of ongoing community consultation and is an opportunity for everyone in the community to have their say on how this unique shared space may be used by all in the community.
Donegal County Council working with Derry City & Strabane District Council in the development of this proposal have engaged in discussions with various groups.
Thes include farming groups, representatives from youth groups, schools, cultural heritage committees, women’s groups, older members of the community, music, art and drama groups, youth organisations, men’s groups, sports organisations, all with a view to providing a range of much needed facilities not currently available to the community on a cross community basis.
In summary, the Riverine Community Park allows for a combined site in Lifford and Strabane, physically linked by a footbridge across the River Foyle.
The Park will provide a Park Pavilion, family play and adventure space, pathways and river walkways, outdoor community events space to accommodate up to 3000 people, safe river access, picnic areas and seating and a natural wetland area accommodating themed workshops and programmed activities including, art drama, music, skills transfer, biodiversity and environmental, the detail of which we will be informed by community engagement facilitated by a community animator.
The Riverine will see the creation of a shared space, designed by the community for the community where the whole community can get active, develop new friendships, find new interests, learn new things to create a positive connected and energised future.
In 2017 Donegal County Council and Derry City and Strabane District Council submitted a funding application to the Peace IV Programme for the Riverine Community Park.
While the application progressed to the second stage of the application process and while the principle of the Riverine Community Park was deemed acceptable and warranted, the application did not meet the threshold for approval based on a lack of evidence demonstrating the need of the community.
Having reviewed the commentary received from the funding body both Councils are committed to making a further application to the 2nd call of the Peace IV Objective 3 Shared Spaces and Services which was announced on the 17th March 2018.
This public consultation event will take place in the Courthouse in Lifford at 6.45pm on Wednesday 23 May 2018. For further information on this proposal visit www.donegalcoco.ie
If you are available to attend the workshop and are interested in the Riverine please take a minute to complete the attached survey monkey and to inform the Riverine Community Park.

In any event the council hopes to convene further opportunities for engagement where everyone can inform the future of the Riverine.
