A Judge has told a thief who was caught with a ‘slimming world’ membership card that he didn’t look like he needed to attend such classes.

Stephen Scott was caught by Gardai wearing gloves and attempting to open car doors in Ramelton, Co Donegal on July 10th last year.

Scott, aged 25, tried to run but dropped a number of items when chased.

When arrested he was in possession of a ‘slimming world’ card.

His solicitor, Mr Patsy Gallagher, said his client was not a member of the organisation.

Judge Paul Kelly replied “He doesn’t look like he needs it.”

The court heard how Scott, of Meadowbank, Letterkenny, is currently serving 3 years in prison following a vicious robbery and assault of a 53-year-old ‘vulnerable man for just €4.

Scott and another man, Patrick Sweeney, aged 21, danced on and repeatedly kicked victim Daniel Byrne in October last year outside Simpson’s Supermarket in Letterkenny.

Scott appeared at Letterkenny District Court where he was also charged with urinating in public and possession of an offensive weapon.

Solicitor Patsy Gallagher said he was going to use his time in court to restart his life and had started a number of education programmes.

Judge Paul Kelly sentenced him to one month in prison for the theft and a further one month for possession of an offensive weapon with both sentences to run concurrently.

Scott, who has 13 previous convictions, was also fined €150 for disorderly conduct.
