Resolutions are being sought for families affected by a disgusting sewage problem at The Pines housing estate in Churchill.
Leaking sewage has been flowing from an unfinished sewage treatment system in the area for years and has been spilling onto roads where children are playing, according to Cllr Michael McBride.
Cllr McBride called on the Letterkenny Municipal District yesterday to do everything in its power to eradicate the issue.
He said: “It is totally unacceptable that anyone should have to live beside this mess. It is a disgrace that it has been going on for so long.
“Nobody that buys a house should have to deal with what the residents are dealing with. There are no words that will paint the picture for anyone that wants to go out and look at it.”
Cllr McBride said children are seen playing with their footballs in the estate which get stuck in piles of leaking sewage, and the sewage is seen on the side of the road where children get their school buses.
The council said the Planning Authority is in discussions with Churchpine Management Company with a view to finding a solution. The company is currently in liquidation and the Donegal County Council Laboratory has initiated prosecution action on the matter.
Mr Joe Ferry of the DCC Laboratory said an enforcement notice has been issued against the receiver, but there has been no engagement. The enforcement process is due to be taken to the next step, Mr Ferry said.
