The outstanding efforts of a Donegal primary school community were recognised this week at the An Taisce Green-Schools BIG Travel Challenge awards 2018.
Staff and students at Scoil Mhuire, Pettigo went above and beyond to promote green travel modes to school as part of the BIG Travel Challenge. They were awarded along with 11 other schools for their achievements at a ceremony in Dublin on Tuesday. St. Brigids National School, Singland, Limerick was awarded the title of ‘Ireland’s Travel School of the Year’.
During February, schools undertook the BIG Travel Challenge, the challenge asked schools to promote one sustainable transport mode for 10 days to see if they could achieve real, lasting change in the travel behaviour of their staff and students.
The Challenge is an initiative of the Green-Schools Travel theme, which is supported by the NTA and the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport.
To date, over 1800 primary and secondary schools countrywide have taken part or are taking part in the Green-Schools Travel programme, implementing sustainable travel action plans in their schools. Since 2008 over 1600 schools have been awarded the Green Flag for Travel, representing successful completion of the travel theme of the Green-Schools programme.
