A local animal rescue charity has called for extra vigilance in Donegal amid a nationwide plight of pet thefts.
As many as nine dogs have gone missing in the Rossnowlagh/Ballyshannon area this week alone, according to the Animals in Donegal Aid Sanctuary.
Charity founder and secretary Tara Lafferty says there is an ‘epidemic of theft of our nation’s pets’.
Tara said: “We find that many many dogs are going missing. Some have been found in the Castlederg area from Gweedore, Omagh and Ballyshannon. Of course not all are suspicious, but dog thefts are on the rise for dog fighting, breeding and selling.”
Pet owners are advised to be extra vigilant and report any suspicious activity to Gardai.
Tara said: “People should be wary of strange cars, as they are the scouters. These people leave clues as to how many dogs are in the area. They have many ways of alerting to the van drivers. These can be chalk marks, stones, plastic bags tied to trees or fences.
“People should not leave their dogs unattended at shops. They should also be very aware that ‘free to a good home’ is like a calling card to these criminals that call themselves bunchers. They appear in a family unit, tell people all they want to hear and leave with animals that will be used for bait or breeding.”
Tara shared the following advice for rehoming pets safely:
1. Arrange a Homevisit
2. Seek photographic ID
3. Keep in touch with the new owners
4. Settle your animal into the new home with their favourite things
