The Spring into Storytime sessions have sparked a huge increase in the number of preschool children, parents and caregivers visiting libraries across Donegal so far this month.
Donna Cavanagh, Senior Executive Librarian believes that these special sessions provide preschool children with a wonderful opportunity to enjoy reading in an interactive, fun and informative way.
“This is a great way for parents to introduce their young children to the joy of reading. The sessions are interactive, fun and informative, and our staff share hints and tips with parents to help them develop a love of reading among their children.”
“Reading with a child is a special time and it is a wonderful way for a parent to get to know their child, and to nurture their individual personalities. It is also a great opportunity to talk about feelings through the experiences of characters in books and can be great way to talk about emotional health in relaxed setting.”
“One of the biggest benefits of reading to preschoolers is a resulting higher aptitude for learning in general. Children who are engaged and invested in their reading lives before going to school are more likely to do well in all spheres of formal education. It is also a great way to support speech and language development as well as their logical thinking skills.”
Donna Cavanagh also explains that reading in a structured daily session will also enhance a child’s concentration and self-discipline.
“Younger children may initially get distracted during story time but as the routine continues, they’ll learn to focus and concentrate. With reading comprehension comes a stronger sense of self-discipline, a longer attention span and better memory retention”.
Spring into Story-time is a Libraries Ireland initiative running during the month of April.
12 libraries across Donegal are delivering specific sessions aimed at preschoolers and their families to reinforce the importance of reading at home.
All events are free of charge, and no booking is required.
Members can avail of up to 12 books at a time for 3 weeks at a time. Children often love to read the same story over and over, and libraries can facilitate an extension so parents can ensure their young ones get to read their favourite book. The library also offers a range of online resources including parenting magazines, and online courses.
