Donegal County Council has proposed a new traffic system for one of Letterkenny’s busiest areas for road users and pedestrians.
The Cathedral Road, Convent Road, College Row and Sentry Hill areas could be changed to have a one-way traffic flow running clockwise from St. Eunan’s Cathedral to St Colmcille NS, St. Eunan’s College and Scoil Mhuire gan Smal.
The development is intended to improve traffic movement, increase footpath width, provide new footpaths and to regulate and create more on-street parking.
As the project reaches Part 8 of the planning process, details and maps were shared with councillors at this week’s sitting of Donegal County Council.

The proposal outlined plans to replace the T-Junction at Cathedral Road and College Row with a free-flowing design. The mini-roundabout opposite St. Eunan’s College is also proposed to be replaced with a free-flow design, with a Yield Sign and Line to control speed.
The scheme has been considered as part of a wider ‘safer routes to school’ initiative and local schools were consulted.
One of the biggest impacts of this development would be the addition of a footpath on both sides of College Row. The narrow road between St Eunan’s College and St Colmcille School, which has significant footfall with many school students daily, has one footpath on one side, and pedestrians must cross the road to walk up the hill. The one-way system will make way for a footpath of 2m width minimum at the location.
A new footpath will be installed at the drop off point for Scoil Mhuire gan Smal, while existing footpaths at Cathedral Road and on Sentry Hill are due to be widened.
Members of Donegal County Council have been asked to consider whether the works should proceed, purely from the point of view of proper planning and control of the area.
