Late goal for Letterkenny Rovers means no Youth League title for Fanad today

A GOAL SEVEN minutes from time from Conor O’Donnell meant Fanad United’s wait for back-to-back Donegal Youth League titles will go on.

Letterkenny Rovers 1-0 Fanad United

Anthony Gorman’s Letterkenny side are still in the race mathematically and have two games to play, however, Fanad, under the stewardship of Niall Doherty know a win against Kilmacrennan Celtic in the final outing next weekend will seal the deal.

Fanad would’ve won the championship this afternoon had they avoided defeat and that might’ve played a part in their mindset. A drab first half created only a couple of opportunities.

Eoghan Jordan in the Fanad goal made a good save on eight minutes from Dylan Brolly after a fine ball in from Jordan Gallagher and then, 20 minutes later, Gallagher, who was about to pull the trigger, was denied by a block from Peter Curran.

Chances were still few and far between until late on, until, in the 83rd minute the deadlock was finally broken when O’Donnell finished beautifully into the bottom corner following a centre from substitute Oran Downey.

Fanad belatedly came into life knowing an equaliser would be enough. Conor McHugh saw a shot blocked and Darren McElwaine was denied by a save from Rovers goalkeeper Eoin O’Boyle.

Then, at the bitter end, Curran hit the Letterkenny Rovers post in agonising fashion.

Letterkenny Rovers: Eoin O’Boyle; Darren Ferry, Ruairi Dennehy, Thomas Keys; Conor O’Donnell, Dylan Bradley, Ryan Higgins, Justin McGee (Conor Friel 81); Ryan O’Donnell (Clintan Ilupeju 60), Jordan Gallagher (Oran Downey 81).

Fanad United: Eoghan Jordan; Fergus Friel, Peter Curran, Matthew Gallagher, Shaun Kerr; Bernard McGettigan, Conor McHugh, Padraig McGinty, Ryan Toye; Darragh Greene, Darren McElwaine.
