Moville Community College hosted their annual ‘Dragons Den’ event last Wednesday.
The event’s aim is to encourage first year Business Studies students to use their creativity to think of new innovations. The event was organised by Ms. Crawford and her fifth year Business class.
The school was fortunate to have the presenter of RTÉ’s ‘Dragons Den’ and business journalist, Richard Curran, hosting this year’s event.
Richard provided the students with a brief background on the premise of ‘Dragons Den’.
“I can see future entrepreneurial billionaires in front of me”, said Richard – a hopeful prospect for the students.
He provided the twenty groups with expert guidance and advice on their potential products and services, selecting seven groups to progress to the next stage of the competition.
These seven groups then worked on their products to pitch to the dragons in the afternoon.
The dragons were local business people, Mary McCauley and Terry Gallagher along with business teacher, Ms. McCafferty.
The first year students showed their high-quality communication and presentation skills, pitching their very innovative products to the judges. This left the judges with a tough decision choosing the winner, however one team prevailed.
The winning team designed a service called, “Cosy Corner”; the idea was founded on having part of an aeroplane specifically adapted for people with special needs so they could ‘travel the world comfortably’.
In their pitch, the team linked their service with World Down Syndrome Day 2018.
