A massive backlog of 50,000 passports has led to lengthy delays for those renewing their passports.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade estimates a turn around of 20 working days, however this is now taking up to 6 weeks.
Fianna Fail TD Charlie McConalogue has said: “If you are planning a holiday this Easter or Summer, please check your passport now.”
People who are renewing their passports are advised to do so online, where the current turnaround is approximately ten working days. The online renewal service is only available to those aged 18 and over.

If you are travelling in less than 15 working days, you must make an appointment at the Passport Office in Cork or Dublin for an over the counter application.
“A lot of stress, money and disappointment can be saved by taking a minute to check your passport now in advance of booking your travel,” Deputy McConalogue added.
“It is very important NOT to use the Passport Express postal service if you are travelling inside the next five weeks. I and my office are happy to advise if you need any further assistance.”
