Gardai have confirmed that a woman killed on a Co Donegal road last
night had been assisted by officers just moments before the tragedy.
Garda Superintendent Eugene McGovern confirmed the 59-year-old woman
had been picked up by officers who were concerned for her welfare
close to a petrol station outside Buncrana.
They left the woman, named locally as Bernie Fullerton of Umricam, off at her requested destination after giving her assistance at 8.42pm.
However, at 9.15pm Gardai received a report that a woman had been
struck by a car at Umricam, between Buncrana and Carndonagh and had
been fatally injured.
A young woman, who was understood to be driving the car which struck
the victim, was interviewed by officers.
Superintendent Eugene McGovern confirmed that the Garda Ombudsman GSOQ
has been informed of the incident.
Ms Fullerton, who is from the locality, is a married woman with children.
A full post-mortem is expected to be carried out at Letterkenny
University Hospital later today.
Superintendent McGovern appealed for anybody who was in the area at
the time to come forward.
“We would like to hear from anybody who was on this road before she
was initially in contact with Gardai at 8.42pm and when the accident
happened at 9.15pm to get in touch with Buncrana Gardai.
“A full investigation has been launched into the incident.
“The Garda Ombudsman has also been contacted in relation to the
matter,” he said.
The death is the fourth on Donegal roads this year and is the second
in just four days.
Emmet McClelland, aged 25, died at Bridgend when he was struck by a
car after celebrating his son’s christening on Saturday night last at
the 19th Hole Bar.
