DNA collected from three members of the ‘Hole in the Roof’ gang has connected them to a spate of Donegal burglaries.

The members were apprehended after pulling off a €250,000 jewellery heist in Athlone during the height of Storm Emma.

It is believed that the Romanian gang are behind up to 100 burglaries across the country, fleeing with over €2 million of stolen cash, cigarettes and goods.

The men (two aged 27, one aged 31), are being held at three separate Garda stations in the midlands.

The military-trained gang are wanted for similar crimes in mainland Europe, including Italy and Norway.

In Donegal, the criminals have targetted Kernan’s Centra in Newmills, Bradley’s newsagent/post office in Killygordon, the Supervalu store in Dungloe, and McCullagh’s Jewellers in Letterkenny.
