Sinn Féin’s Deputy Dáil Leader Pearse Doherty TD has announced that his party will table a Dáil Private Members Motion to call for the disbandment of the Strategic Communications Unit.
Speaking this morning, Teachta Doherty said; “Project Ireland 2040 has confirmed what many of us already knew – that the Government’s Strategic Communications Unit is a highly expensive PR Unit, paid for by the taxpayer for the benefit of the Taoiseach and Fine Gael.
“It is a slap in the face to the Irish taxpayer and it is not acceptable.
“Sinn Féin will move a private members motion in the Dáil at the earliest opportunity to call for the disbandment of the PR spin machine and we will be seeking Micheál Martin’s and Fianna Fáil’s support to get the motion passed.
“My colleague Deputy David Cullinane has already called for the Taoiseach to appear before the Public Accounts Committee, alongside senior civil servant Martin Fraser and the Head of the Strategic Communications Unit John Concannon, to account for the money spent on this unit to date.
“This is an avenue we will continue to pursue as this money must be accounted for,” Deputy Doherty concluded.
