Met Eireann has issued a status yellow snow-ice warning for Donegal.
Scattered heavy snow showers are expected today, tonight and tomorrow.
The warning came into effect at 8am this morning and will be lifted tomorrow at 12 noon.
The status yellow warning has also been issued for Galway, Clare and Limerick.
Met Eireann’s regional forecast indicates that today will be “bitterly cold”, with scattered showers of snow and hail, along with the risk of isolated thunderstorms. Temperatures of just zero to 2 degrees.
“Tonight there will be some further scattered snow showers in places,” forecasters say.
“Extremely cold with lowest temperatures of – 3 to – 6 degrees with frost and icy patches.
“There will be no let-up in the cold wintry conditions through Thursday; further snowfall and freezing temperatures in easterly winds. Some brighter periods in between the snow showers also.”
Donegal County Council gritters have been out since 6 am on all major routes.

Further east conditions are much worse, with a status red warning being issued for Dublin, Kildare, Louth, Wicklow and Meath.
Much of Leinster has woken up to a heavy blanket of snow of up to 10cm, with forecasters predicting that by tomorrow, this may reach 25cm.
Meanwhile a status orange warning has been issued for Carlow, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Wexford, Offaly, Westmeath, Cork, Tipperary and Waterford.
It is not yet known if Met Eireann will increase Donegal’s weather warning as Storm Emma develops, with status yellow being the mildest warning.
