A Community Involvement Scheme (CIS) will soon be taking applications from the public for local road resurfacing works.
The Donegal County Council scheme is aimed at improving the condition of certain local Council roads and cul de sacs which normally do not get included in its annual roadworks programme.
The scheme allocates up to 80% part-funding to applicants for the works and assistance in carrying them out.
Cllr Patrick McGowan said: “This scheme differs from the LIS farmers Lane scheme in that it is for council roads in poor condition. Farmers, builders or anyone living on a quiet county road who is fed up waiting on the Council to resurface their road can undertake the work along with the Council and in draw down the grant.”
The key feature of the CIS is that funding from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport (DTTAS) can be provided to the Council following submission and assessment of applications from local communities requesting that road improvement works are carried out.
This is together with payment of a fixed monetary contribution from the local community towards the cost of the agreed works.
The Council will work with groups of local residents and landowners and avail of the CIS funding from the DTTAS for the restoration of local Council roads and cul de sacs, subject to approval and funding.
The CIS requires payment of an overall community contribution of 20% towards the cost of the agreed works, schemes selected for funding will be undertaken in 2018.
“The CIS presents an opportunity for communities to have road repair work carried out on local roads and cul de sacs that would not normally be included as a priority on the Council’s Main Roadworks programme.
“The Community Involvement Scheme application forms containing terms, conditions and details of the scheme will be available on the Council web page shortly,” said Cllr McGowan.
