Convoy schoolgirl Mikaela Breen will be starting her road to recovery after undergoing spinal surgery in the UK today.
The 8-year-old is said to be safe and sound with her parents Chris and Sinead after the first major step of her treatment was completed this afternoon.
Mikaela is a bubbly little girl who was born prematurely and diagnosed with Spina bifida lipomyelomeningocele. To avoid further debilitation, her family were forced to fundraise for specialist surgery, and she has since received huge levels of support from all across the northwest and beyond.
The prayers of hundreds of well-wishers were with Mikaela today, including her Scoil Bhride Convoy classmates, as she underwent the vital procedure at Alder Hey in Liverpool.
Mikaela’s mum Sinead shared the positive news this afternoon:
“Mikaela is out of recovery and back with us. The surgery went great. They knew it was an extremely complex case but when they started was even more complex than MRI’s can show so they couldn’t do everything, but we are ecstatic that we have our pause button and our baby girl is back safe and sound.
“This hospital and in particular her neurosurgery team are incredible. Chris and I are so so grateful for all the prayers and well wishes for Mikaela.”

Sinead’s news of the successful surgery outcome has been met with delight from family and friends. Over the last number of months, the wish to help transform Mikaela’s life brought a community together to raise almost €38,000, surpassing the GoFundMe target of €35,000 this month.
