The family of Michael McGrath have asked for ‘support through prayer’ in a touching and heart-wrenching statement this morning.
The 40-year-old father-of-one was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer late last year.
A public fundraising drive raised over €167,000 from almost 3,000 donations, which poured in from all corners of the globe.
Although surgery was not an option, the popular schoolteacher was able to travel to Austria for specialised immunotherapy.
Michael spent Christmas with his family, including his wife Susan and son Senán.
This morning, on the ‘A future for Michael’ page on Go Fund Me, his family posted an update asking for ‘support through prayer’ in Michael’s ‘remaining time with us’.
“It is with deep sadness and heartbreak that we post this update,” they said. “Unfortunately Michael took very weak during his treatment in Vienna.
“He was near completion of the treatment and all was going well however Michael took a turn for the worse and had to be taken home.
“He spent a few days at home with all the family and is now currently in the Donegal Hospice.
“We ask for family time now and for everyone to continue to support Michael through prayer in his remaining time with us.
“Michael got so much strength and hope from you all and enjoyed a very happy and special Christmas with Senán and all the family.
“Thank you & God bless you all.
Michaels Family x”
