Met Éireann has warned that the cold snap is set to make a return next week, with hail, sleet, and snow showers forecast.
Today Met Éireann forecasts patchy rain and drizzle along strong to gusty southwest winds, with highs of 11 to 13 degrees.
Tomorrow will be slightly cooler, with temperatures ranging between 5 to 7 degrees. Sunny spells and a few isolated showers are also forecast for tomorrow, with fresh winds easing towards the evening.
Tomorrow night will be chilly with temperatures plunging to -2 in some parts of the country, with temperatures forecast to be between 3 to 5 degrees in the northwest. There is a risk of frost and icy patches developing on untreated surfaces on Monday and Tuesday night.
Tuesday night will bring more wintry showers of hail, sleet and snow. Gusty westerly winds are forecast with lows of zero to 4.
Gusty westerly winds will reach near gale force along the coasts on Wednesday, with some heavy showers of hail and sleet expected. Some falls of snow are also possible on higher ground. Afternoon temperatures will be between 2 and 5 degrees on Wednesday.
“Scattered showers, some of them wintry, will continue through Wednesday night, bringing a risk of icy stretches on untreated surfaces. Lows of minus 1 to plus 3 degrees Celsius. Gusty westerly winds will veer northwesterly overnight, with frost in sheltered spots,” forecasters say.
It will remain cold and blustery on Thursday, but it will be less windy than Wednesday.
“Scattered showers will continue to occur, but they will be less frequent than on Wednesday, with longer drier intervals and sunny spells too. Afternoon highs will range 4 to 7 degrees with gusty northwesterly winds moderating,” Met Éireann says.
