Local fishermen are being commended for securing the pipe that brings water out to Gola Island.
The pipe provides drinking water to the island that sits 2 kilometres off the coast of Gweedore.
Last Saturday the freshwater pipe began to leak and rose to the surface. Local fishermen sunk the pipe in the interest of health and safety, and to prevent the pipe from causing damage to fishing vessels or getting tangled in nets.
Independent Cllr Micheal Mac Giolla Easbuig has commended the fishermen for tending to the fault. He has also commended Donegal County Council staff who are currently working to identify where the leak is.
The Council has been in contact with a diving company to secure the pipe permanently with specially designed blocks. The diving team will carry out the work once the weather becomes milder.
“This happened last year and it’s vitally important that this work is carried out sooner rather than later, we can’t have a repeat of this every year,” he told Donegal Daily.
The pipe rose last year as well and it was mended, however a different section came to the surface last weekend.
