Shay Given has shared his delight after being named Donegal Person of the Year.

Given was chosen to take the title this year due to his hugely successful career, remarkable charity work, and for always expressing pride in his Donegal roots.

“Unbelievably delighted and proud to have been named Donegal Person of the Year,” Shay wrote on Instagram.

“This is such a huge honour. I’ve always been so proud of my roots and my home county, my family, my friends and all of the wonderful people from Donegal.

“I can’t wait to spend the next 12 months promoting everything that is wonderful about the place I’m from and helping in any way I can the people of Donegal.

“Thank you to the committee for nominating me and all the amazing work you do, so glad to be a part of it, I have big shoes to fill following Stephen McCahill who was a fantastic ambassador,” he concluded.

The announcement took place in The Black Door Piano Bar on Harcourt Street in Dublin last night, and he will be inaugurated as the Donegal Person of the Year at a lavish gala on the 3rd of March at the Ballsbridge Hotel.

The proud Lifford man follows in the footsteps of fellow soccer star Packie Bonner and legendary GAA manager Jim McGuinness by scooping the prestigious award.
