Met Éireann has issued a status yellow snow-ice warning for Donegal, Cavan, and Monaghan as the cold snap continues.
Met Éireann forecasts that a band of heavy rain will move up from the south tonight, turning to sleet and snow in places as it encounters the cold air.
“Snowfall accumulations will be highest in upland parts of Donegal. Any snow will turn back to rain later on Sunday morning as much milder air extends from the south,” they say.
The regional forecast indicates that temperatures are expected to dip to between -3 and 1 tonight, rising to between 3 and 6 degrees by morning.
The warning comes into effect tonight at 11pm, and will remain in place until 8am tomorrow morning.
The UK Met Office has also issued a status yellow ice warning for Northern Ireland, with icy patches on roads, pavements and cycle paths likely.
They warn that this could lead to injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces. The UK Met Office’s warning is valid between 1am and 9am tomorrow morning.

Tomorrow will be cold and wet, with further outbreaks of rain, with temperatures ranging between 7 to 10 degrees.
There will be some sleet on higher ground at first, giving way to sunnier spells towards the afternoon.
AA Roadwatch is appealing to motorists to slow down and allow yourself more time to reach your destination.
“Bear in mind, stopping distances are ten times longer in ice and snow,” a spokesperson says.
