Abbey Vocational School in Donegal Town is working towards launching an Aonad Gaeilge within the school from September 2018.
The school, which is under the management of Donegal Education and Training Board, will offer the curriculum up to the completion of the Junior Cycle with an ongoing review of provision.
The subjects offered in the Aonad Gaeilge will include Gaeilge, Maths, History, Geography, Science, and Religion.
Subjects such as Physical Education, Civics, Social and Political Education, and Social, Personal and Health Education, will come under the new Wellbeing subject in the Aonad.
For optional subjects, pupils will integrate with the wider school community. Examples of these electives include Metalwork, Woodwork, Technical Graphics, Music and Art.
English and Modern Languages will be taught through the language of the subject.
Minister for the Gaeltacht Joe McHugh TD, has this morning congratulated the school for its work towards establishing the new Aonad Gaeilge.
Minister McHugh said: “I wish to congratulate Geraldine Diver, Johnny Sweeney and all the team in Abbey Vocational School, as well as Donegal ETB who have been working hard in establishing this new Aonad Gaeilge in the school.
“There will be a strong emphasis on Irish culture and language through a range of new extracurricular activities being carried out by the school, and I welcome this measure in promoting and enhancing our language and culture, which will undoubtedly assist these students and the local community as a whole.”
