Speculation is rising over who will be crowned Donegal Person of the Year 2017, and there’s talk of a surprise newcomer taking the title.
The prestigious honour of being Donegal Person of the Year is bestowed upon ambassadors of the county by the Donegal Association Dublin. The award recognises people who have championed Donegal at home and abroad and have made outstanding contributions to their home county.
There is one name has been hot on the lips of fans of the Channel 4 hit comedy Derry Girls – and that’s Kamal, the wee Ethiopian fella from Ballybofey.
Young Kamal has become a much-loved fictional celebrity in recent weeks since he got a mention in the debut episode of Derry Girls.
Donegal Daily ran a story last week asking our readers who they think should be Person of the Year for 2017, and a clever comment from local man Michael Doherty and popular vote soon tipped Kamal for the honour.
He even got approval from Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee, who retweeted Michael’s comment on Twitter!
Who is Kamal?
Kamal is a poor 10-year-old boy from Ethiopia who has a tough childhood walking the distance from Derry to Ballybofey every day to get water. He was to be the beneficiary of schoolgirl Clare’s 24 hour fast, and in a hilarious mix-up, he was believed to be from Donegal.
The real Donegal Person of the Year will be announced on Friday, 19th January in Dublin. Who do you think it will be?
