First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon says that depending on the deal reached between the UK and the EU, another Independence Referendum could be on the cards for Scotland.
The SNP leader told Andrew Marr that she hopes there is an alternative to Scotland’s departure from the EU, and says she believes independence may be the best way forward.
“I believe independence is the best future for Scotland,” she explained.
“I still believe that whatever future Scotland chooses for itself… that is a future that shouldn’t be imposed on us, it’s one we should have the ability to choose and decide for ourselves.”
When further clarity is given to the UK’s future relationship with the EU, Sturgeon says that Scotland should be able to decide between “whatever that new relationship with the UK is going to be or choosing to be an independent country.”
Sturgeon said that between October and December, she will be able to decide on what the next appropriate step will be for Scotland.
The first Independence Referendum in 2014 was defeated, with 2,001,926 votes against independence and 1,617,989 for independence.
Sturgeon believes that public opinion has now changed, and claims that the popularity for independence has grown since Brexit.
Tomorrow a paper will be published by the Scottish government detailing the three possible outcomes from Brexit. It will analyse the impact Brexit will have on elements such as Scotland’s GDP, trade, and migration.
