The unsettled first days of January 2018 are set to turn much colder by the weekend with freezing conditions on the way.
Tonight (Thursday) is due to turn very cold and drop to minimum temperatures of -1 degrees. There is a risk of frost and ice and potential snowfall on higher ground.

Met Eireann has forecast a cold and frosty weekend. Wintry falls on higher ground are expected in Ulster on Friday night along with rain showers. Lows of 1 to -2 degrees are forecast for nighttime.
Saturday is due to be a cold and bright day with raw winds. Wintry showers may fall during the day before a cold, frosty and icy night. Temperatures will range from 0 to -3 or -4 degrees and there is a risk of some freezing fog in northern parts of the country.
Looking ahead to Sunday, the forecast tells of another cold day with bright and sunny spells. It will turn cold and very frosty on Sunday night with freezing temperatures.
