Bundoran beach in Co. Donegal has been blanketed in a strange sea phenomenon as Storm Eleanor approaches Ireland.
Hugh waves of sea foam washed up on the beach yesterday which were caught on camera by local woman Andrea Whelan.
Andrea said the waves were up to 4ft in height, and while they are not uncommon at this location, this week’s waves were particularly high.
Andrea told Donegal Daily: “Bundoran gets foam on the beach during storms and rough seas but not like this!! The waves were just pure foam it was 4ft deep on the beach.”
According to the National Ocean Service, sea foams in this way during stormy times when the ocean is agitated by wind and waves. The turbulence stirs up dissolved organic particles to create a natural foam that is not usually harmful to humans.
Donegal is due to be hit with strong winds and heavy downpours from Tuesday night into Wednesday with the arrival of Storm Eleanor. See details of the weather and road warnings here:
