Christmas came early to the children’s ward at Letterkenny University Hospital after receiving a generous donation of toys funded by the Damien Hunter Memorial Cycle.
The annual memorial cycle is organised by LK Bikes in memory of Damien Hunter, who was born on New Year’s Day 1993.
Damien suffered from health complications and spent a lot of time in the children’s ward at LUH. When Damien sadly passed away in May 2011, his brother Mark, cousin Gavin, and the rest of his family and the staff at LK Bikes decided to host a memorial cycle in his honour.
“We ran our first event in September 2011 and have been running them annually since,” Gavin explained to Donegal Daily.
Each year, they use the funds raised during the cycle to donate anything that the children staying at the hospital may require; such as pyjamas, arts and crafts materials, televisions, toys, and everything in between!
This year the cycle raised €2,000, allowing the team to donate a huge amount of toys, puzzles, board-games, paints and colours, DVDs and DVD players, and loads of other Christmas goodies.
“They were very grateful to see us coming, there are kids that will be staying in the ward over Christmas so it’s nice to have new stuff there for them, it ties in well with the time of year.
“There were two or three children there when we made the donation and they were pretty surprised looking! It was really nice to see that.”
Gavin, Mark, and the Hunter family would like to thank everyone who supports the event each year. They would also like to thank the Glencar Inn for providing refreshments and offering their venue each year.
Happy Christmas everyone.
