Prominent Donegal woman Gráinne Mhic Géidigh of Dunlewey, Gaoth Dobhair, has passed away.
Her death took place on Tuesday, 19th December at Letterkenny University Hospital. Funeral mass will be take place on Friday, December 22nd.
Gráinne was a much-respected Sinn Fein member and passionate promoter of the Irish language.
In 2005, Gráinne made a historic breakthrough for Sinn Féin after being elected as the first representative of the party to the Board of Údarás na Gaeltachta. She was also the first female from any party to be elected to the board.
Former colleague and friend Cllr Jack Murray paid tribute to Grainne’s memory today, saying: “Grainne was a lovely, kind hearted woman, passionate Gaeilgeoir, proud Donegal woman and a stalwart of Irish republicanism.
Cllr Murray added: “She was a beautiful and classy woman and she’ll be missed by all of us who were lucky to have known her.
“Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”
Gráinne is survived by her husband Edward, her two sons and two daughters, as well as her five sisters.
Her remains will repose at her late residence from 2pm on Wednesday 20th.
Removal from there on Friday (22nd) at 10.30am for 11am funeral mass at the Sacred Heart Church, Dunlewey, with burial afterwards in the adjoining graveyard.
House private from 11pm to 10am and on the morning of the funeral.
Rosary both nights at 9pm.
