The government has this morning pledged €47,000 towards an Adventure Sports Arena within Letterkenny Town Park.
This fantastic resource will be delivered by Donegal Sports Partnership, and is proposed to deliver a number of outdoor activities within Letterkenny Town Park including: orienteering, climbing wall, off-road cycling track and archery.
A spokesperson for the Department of Rural and Community Development tells Donegal Daily that a varied and ambitious activity programme is also proposed to engage families and young people living in Letterkenny in outdoor recreation sports in Letterkenny Town Park. A working group of key agencies will oversee the project.
This follows Minister for Community Development, Natural Resources and Digital Development, Seán Kyne TD’s approval of almost €1.5 million from the Dormant Accounts Fund towards a range of projects and programmes under the National Physical Activity Plan.
Commented Minister Kyne: “This funding of almost €1.5 million will fund projects that are at the heart of the objectives of the Dormant Accounts Fund to support disadvantaged communities and to promote projects which encourage personal, social and educational development.
“In addition, the projects form part of the National Physical Activity Plan which is helping to promote physical activity and harness the health – physical and mental – benefits of activity and exercise for citizens.”
Speaking of the allocation, Minister Joe McHugh says: “I want to thank Minister Sean Kyne who is giving this funding to County Donegal today from the Dormant Accounts Fund. He understands the value this arena will bring to the town.
“Outdoor recreation plays a huge role in healthy lifestyles and these plans will add to the wonderful amenity of the Town Park in Letterkenny.”
Letterkenny Mayor Cllr Jimmy Kavanagh added: “This is a fantastic boost for the town park and will add even more to the activities already available there.
“This is an early Christmas present for families in Letterkenny today. I want to thank Joe McHugh for securing this funding today for the town.”
