Brendan Bradley’s League of Ireland goalscoring record will be safe for some time yet after his nearest challenger stepped away from senior football.
Finn Harps icon Bradley netted 231 League of Ireland goals and his record has stood for the last 31 years.
Byrne has put up a relentless pursuit over the years and came to within 13. But the 39-year-old has left First Division side Cabinteely to join Bluebell United, meaning his chance at overhauling Bradley appears gone.
Byrne first played in the League of Ireland in the 1998/99 season and that year was part of the Bray Wanderers side that defeated Harps after two FAI Cup final replays.
Byrne has two Republic of Ireland senior caps and has also played for Shelbourne, Bohemians, Cardiff City, Dundalk, Bray and UCD.
