A Donegal heifer has certainly proved to be a ‘cash cow’ as it sold for a record-breaking sum at Raphoe Mart.
The 22-month-old Charolais heifer sold for €4,900 last Friday, also scooping the title Supreme Champion in the Raphoe Fatstock Show and Sale.
The award-winning heifer’s sire was a LGL Charolais bull, and her dam was a Limosin Charolais cross cow.
Speaking to Donegal Daily, Sarah Miller Arthur says: “The heifer was one of the best we have had and she was exactly what the judges were looking for which made her so special, she also has great breeding potential to produce super show calves in the future.”
Sarah attended the Mart with her uncle Joshua Miller from Dromore, Letterkenny, with their heifer proving to be a big hit with judges Alan Lecky and Gerry Law.
Joshua bought the heifer in Castleblayney Mart in Monaghan last year.
“I was delighted with the record price that we got for her,” Sarah said, “there were a lot of people interested in the heifer prior to the sale and once she was in the ring, the auction just took off.
“I showed the heifer and both my uncle and I were very proud’.
“We also showed a Limousin Bullock who is also 22 months old and he won the Champion Bullock prize, so overall if it was a successful day.”
The heifer is in for more ribbons as her new owner hopes to continue showing her at ‘udder’ Marts across the country!
