Dungloe’s Matthew McCole was left chew on a bitter defeat last night at the Irish Senior Championships in Dublin.
The Dungloe ABC southpaw felt he had won his light-welterweight final with Kenneth Doyle from Monkstown.
McCole, the recently-crowned Ulster Senior champion, had been in confident tune leading up to these Championships and seemed a good bet to land the title.
McCole was the aggressor for most of the bout and seemed a relatively comfortable victor.
And yet the verdict came down on the side of Dubliner Doyle, 4-1, following a countback.
McCole was left gutted and the Dungloe officials seething as they came to terms with a stomach-churning defeat for their man.
There was also defeat last night for Illies Golden Gloves’ Cathal Browne, who lost out 4-1 to Ballinacarrow’s Jason Clancy in the light-heavyweight decider.
