Letterkenny is said to be the place to be this Christmas, where events with a difference are planned for the heart of the town.
The town’s Cathedral Quarter committee has come up with a unique programme of events and an invitation is extended to all to come along and celebrate.
There will be carols, candlelight processions, mummering, and something for the ladies this season.
Carolling at the Cathedral Quarter:
The first event gets underway on Wednesday, 20th December at 7.30pm with a Christmas Carol Trail.
Organised in association with Letterkenny Chamber of Commerce and Letterkenny CDP, the carol service is facilitated by Trinity Presbyterian Church, St Eunan’s Cathedral and Conwal Parish Church. It marks the fourth ‘Community Carol Trail’ in Letterkenny and all are welcome to come along and participate in what should be a very memorable evening.
The carol trail will begin with Christmas Carols and readings at Trinity Presbyterian Church on Letterkenny’s main street at 7.30pm.
The group will then make its way up the Church Lane in a candlelit procession which is being put together by Letterkenny CDP and donations can be made on the night.
The carol service will end at Letterkenny’s oldest building, Conwal Parish Church at the top of the Church Lane for more carols and a short reading.
The evening will finish with tea and mince pies in Conwal Parish Church Centre.
This unique event promises to be a very special evening and hopes to give people the chance to take time and reflect on the real message of Christmas; ‘goodwill to all’.
So, come along on Wednesday, 20th December and enjoy a very special night in Letterkenny’s Cathedral Quarter.
Mummers
The old local Christmas tradition of Mummers will be revived in Letterkenny this December.
Back in the day, the mummer tradition would brighten up the long winter days with entertainment in the run up to Christmas. Mummers would dress in disguise and go from house to house and pubs singing songs and performing plays and receive food, drink or money in return.
The Cathedral Quarter Committee want to revive this rich tradition and invited those who would like to perform as a mummer or welcome entertainers to their home or business to get in touch.
It will be great fun on a few Saturday’s in December from 3-6pm. Could be a few extra bob in the pocaí for the Mummers and will get us all in festive spirit too. We look forward to hearing from you and also if you remember some of the old rhymes etc. do get in touch also. Contact us on Letterkenny Cathedral Quarter Facebook page or call Amanda on 0838762565
Nollaig na mBan/Little Christmas
Nollaig na mBan is the day on which all the Christmas decorations must come down—not before or after—or else risk bad luck for the rest of the year.
In bygone days women would rest after the busy time and gather in each other’s homes or local pubs for a well deserved break while the men looked after the home.
We the Cathedral Quarter would like to revive this tradition but with a modern twist as we know most households share equal roles nowadays, so watch this space for a January 6th revival of Nollaig na mBan!
