Anybody driving above the speed limit by 20kph on a Letterkenny Road on the day a new speed limit was introduced are to be given a pardon, it has been revealed.
There was uproar recently when the speed signs on the main Letterkenny Road between the Polestar and Dry Arch Roundabouts was changed from 100kph to 80kph.
Signs were erected on the day but a GoSafe speed van also operated on the same stretch of roads within hours of the speed limit signs going up.
It is understood a number of drivers were clocked driving above the 80kph limit but under 100kph.
Many were worried they would be fined and claimed it was too much of a coincidence that a GoSafe van was operating on the same day the signs changed.
Now the company who operate the GoSafe vans has moved to assure the chairman of Donegal County Council, Cllr Gerry McMonagle that they will not receive the dreaded speeding fine in the post.
Cllr McMonagle said the company claim they were only recording drivers doing in excess of 100kph.
“They said they were not informed the signs were changed and if the van was there it was working on apprehending those driving in excess of 100kph.
“Basically anyone traveling under 100kph on that road on that day should not have to worry about receiving a speeding summons.
“However, I would ask people to be mindful that the speed limit on that stretch of road is now 80kph,” he said.
